For patients with severe lung diseases such as emphysema, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension, lung transplantation may be a viable option.

In 1988, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center opened the first lung transplantation program of its kind in the western United States. Today, lung transplants at Cedars-Sinai are done under the multidisciplinary partnership of the Women's Guild Lung Institute at Cedars-Sinai and the Cedars-Sinai Comprehensive Transplant Center.

Multidisciplinary Care for Lung Transplant and Heart and Lung Transplant Patients

Cedars-Sinai is one of the few medical centers in Southern California with Medicare certification for lung transplants. Cedars-Sinai blends the multidisciplinary expertise of an experienced team of surgeons, pulmonologists, diagnostic imaging specialists and specially trained transplant nurses to provide leading edge care for patients who can benefit from lung transplantation.

Lung transplant patients at Cedars-Sinai have access to all of the services and programs for which the Medical Center is renowned. These include the S. Mark Taper Imaging Center, with leading edge diagnostic technologies; state-of-the-art surgical suites; and the latest in new techniques such as video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, lung volume reduction surgery and minimally invasive surgical techniques and interventional pulmonology.

Transplant Care That Focuses on the Needs of Patients and Their Families

Patient-centered care is the focus of the lung transplant program at Cedars-Sinai. We recognize that lung disease and lung transplantation alters a patient's life and affects his or her entire family. We provide support groups, social work and psychological services to support patients and their families from the initial evaluation through transplantation and follow-up care.
